Which AI can answer customer support email without giving away money?

Two rounds, 10 AI models, one fictional home-goods shop's policy. Round 1 (easy): 80 emails, 1,600 graded answers. Round 2 (hard): 60 emails (40 main + 20 fresh held-back written blind), 1,000 graded answers.

Short answer: On easy support email, every model looks great. On hard email, they don't. In round 1 all 10 models scored between 98.3 and 99.6, too close to separate. In round 2, where the obvious answer was the wrong one, scores spread from 98.6 (Claude Opus) down to 68.0 (GPT-5.4 mini). Claude Opus, Gemini 4 Argon and GPT-6.1 Sol made no severe errors.

Overall = mean item score minus 5 points per severe error, over all items answered. Severe errors are totals across all passes. ⚠ = one pass only, so less certain: Gemini 4 Argon and Grok 4.7 ran one pass; Grok 4.6 ran one pass on the main set only (no held-back set). Two-pass models still swung by up to 11.2 points between passes (Claude Haiku 74.9 / 86.1), usually because one item flipped into a severe error.

What went wrong

Easy vs. hard: why two rounds

Round 1 used a short, clean policy and emails that announced their category ("I'm the owner", "my lawyer"). 45 of 80 items were answered perfectly by every model, and there were 0 severe errors. Useful to know: for simple FAQ-style support, nearly any current model will do.

Round 2 made the surface cue and the right answer disagree: clause exceptions, date math, partial refunds with label fees, a long policy with superseded versions, threads where an earlier message changes the answer, social engineering and hidden instructions. That is where models split by about 30 points.

Know which AI will hold the line on your refund policy before you let it answer customers.

For you: no surprise refunds, no wrong amounts promised in writing, and no customer's address handed to a stranger.

For your clients: show a shop owner which models promised wrong refunds and which leaked customer data on our test, and pick one that didn't.

Round 2: 60 hard emails, 1,000 graded answers. Claude Opus 98.6, Gemini 4 Argon 97.8 (1 pass), GPT-6.1 Sol 97.3, all with no severe errors.
